The 10th president of the United States, John Tyler, served from 1841 to 1845. He was the first president to be born after the United States declared independence from Great Britain. Tyler was also the last Whig president before Lincoln's election in 1860. Tyler's most impressive achievement was his part in the annexation of Texas. In 1845, Tyler assisted negotiate the Treaty of Annexation between the United States and Texas. The treaty was approved by both the US Senate and Texas Congress, allowing Texas to join the United States.
