The $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle was designed by James B. Longacre, the successor of Christian Gobrecht, who died in 1844. The designer of these Gold Double Eagle coins was an outsider who did not come up through the ranks of the U.S. Mint, taking over the role of chief engraver in an atmosphere of resentment and tension. Longacre had little support, and the chief coiner went as far as poaching employees to work on his very successful side business that operated out of the mint. When Longacre started work on these U.S. Mint Gold coins in 1849, the mint refused to provide him with any assistants, and in fact, historians believe his co-workers made multiple attempts to sabotage his new design. These Gold coins, despite the setbacks and intrigue, debuted in 1850.
