The Black Swan
The Black Swan hold a distinctive place in Australian culture, particularly in Western Australia, where it is the official state bird and prominent symbol of regional identity. Native to Australia, the Black Swan has appeared in Aboriginal culture for thousands of years and later became closely associated with European exploration of the continent. Its discovery challenged the long-held European belief that all swan were white, helping make the "black swan" a lasting symbol of the unexpected, rare and extraordinary. Today, the bead appears on Western Australia's flag, coat of arms and other emblems, representing both the state's unique natural heritage and the remarkable wildlife found across Australia.
