Portraits of a Queen: The First Effigy
The first official coinage portrait of Queen Elizabeth II was created in 1952 by sculptor Mary Gillick, whose design won a competition held by The Royal Mint Advisory Committee. Unlike past effigies, Gillick’s portrait captured the young Queen with a fresh, graceful look, wearing a classical laurel wreath instead of a crown. Introduced on coins in 1953, her elegant design became one of the most recognizable images of the Queen across the Commonwealth. The Portraits of a Queen Collection honors this historic first effigy alongside the other definitive portraits used throughout her reign.
