University of Tennessee
The University of Tennessee, founded in 1794 and located in Knoxville, is the flagship campus of the University of Tennessee system and one of the oldest public universities in the United States. Renowned for its strong academic programs, UT offers a wide array of undergraduate, graduate, and professional degrees in fields such as business, engineering, agriculture, and the sciences, and is a hub for research and innovation in areas like energy and materials science. The university’s athletic teams, known as the Tennessee Volunteers or “Vols,” are a central part of campus life and state pride. Competing in the Southeastern Conference (SEC), the Vols are especially celebrated for their football program, which plays at Neyland Stadium, one of the largest college football stadiums in the country, known for its electric game-day atmosphere. The university’s beloved mascot, Smokey — a bluetick coonhound — appears at games alongside a costumed version, rallying fans and representing Volunteer spirit. Tennessee also has highly competitive men’s and women’s basketball teams, and the Lady Vols women’s basketball program is legendary, with multiple national championships and a storied legacy under the late, iconic coach Pat Summitt.
