While minted in large numbers, untold numbers of these Pre-1933 Gold coins were melted down in the 1930s as the United States government attempted to discontinue the circulation of Gold, even going so far as to order the confiscation and mandatory buyback of Gold coins held by citizens at the time, reducing the finite supply of these popular Gold coins.
